Title: Simulating the environment of astrophysical compact objects

Abstract: The recent advances in observing technology allow us to study with increasing detail astrophysical environments dominated by strong gravity. Numerical simulations are an important tool for for boosting our theoretical understanding of such systems. In the first part of this talk I will discuss how simulation codes have aided with the interpretation of the recent observations of the Event Horizon Telescope, while in a second part, I will describe the general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulation code BHAC (The Black Hole Accretion Code) and some of its most recently added features, including radiation feedback and electric resistivity, which make it a versatile tool for studying a wider variety of astrophysical scenarios.
